Timber Sleeper Retaining Walls on the Gold Coast, QLD
Timber sleeper retaining walls are the budget-friendly, natural-looking way to hold back a slope on the Gold Coast, and they remain one of the most requested walls we build. A timber wall softens a garden in a way concrete or block never quite does, it sits comfortably against lawn, decking and established plants, and on the right block it costs noticeably less to build. At Gold Coast Retaining Walls we build treated pine and hardwood sleeper walls across the coast and the hinterland, from a simple garden terrace in Reedy Creek to a tiered landscaping wall on a sloping Mudgeeraba block.
A timber sleeper wall is built from horizontal sleepers stacked between vertical posts. We almost always use galvanised steel posts rather than timber posts, because steel does not rot in the ground and gives the wall a much longer life. The sleepers themselves are either H4-treated pine or, for a tougher and longer-lasting finish, Australian hardwood. The posts are set in concrete footings, the sleepers drop in behind them, and a drainage line runs along the base to take water away.
Treated Pine or Hardwood — Which Suits Your Block
The honest answer depends on your budget and how long you want the wall to last. H4-treated pine is the most affordable option and is treated to resist rot and termites below ground; it is ideal for garden walls, terracing and lower retaining work. Hardwood sleepers, such as ironbark, cost more but are denser, heavier and stand up to our climate for longer, which makes them a better choice where the wall is doing serious structural work or is on show. We will walk you through both on-site and quote whichever genuinely suits your block, not whichever earns us more.
Why Timber Walls Need Care on the Gold Coast
Timber is a living material, and the Gold Coast climate is hard on it. Our subtropical wet season soaks the ground from November through April, and South East Queensland has some of the heaviest termite pressure in the country. A timber wall that is not properly treated, not drained, and not built with steel posts will fail far sooner than it should. That is exactly why we build the way we do: H4 or hardwood timber, galvanised steel posts in concrete footings, and a proper subsoil drainage line with free-draining aggregate behind every wall. Done right, the timber is protected from the two things that kill it, constant moisture and insects.
Our Timber Sleeper Retaining Wall Process
- Free on-site quote. We visit your block, measure the fall, check the soil and access, and give you a fixed written quote with no obligation. You choose the timber; we give you a straight price.
- Engineering and approval. Any wall over one metre, or any wall carrying a load such as a driveway or pool, needs RPEQ structural engineering and a building approval through a private certifier. We organise the engineering and the Form 15 and Form 16 paperwork so your wall is fully compliant.
- Posts and footings. We dig the post holes to the engineered depth and set the galvanised steel posts in concrete. The footings are left to cure before any sleepers go on, so the wall starts from a solid base.
- Sleepers, drainage and backfill. We drop the treated pine or hardwood sleepers into place, install the ag pipe, drainage gravel and geofabric behind the wall, then backfill and compact in layers. You finish with a straight, level wall that drains properly.
Timber Sleeper Retaining Wall Cost on the Gold Coast
Timber is usually the most affordable retaining option, which is a big part of its appeal. As a guide, treated pine sleeper walls on the Gold Coast run from about $200 to $400 per square metre supplied and installed, GST inclusive, with hardwood walls sitting higher again because the timber itself costs more. A small garden wall under a metre often lands between $2,500 and $5,000, while a taller engineered wall on a difficult block will cost more once height, hardwood and site access are factored in.
As with any wall over a metre, two costs sit outside the timber: RPEQ engineering certification, typically $500 to $1,500, and the council building approval fee, usually a few hundred dollars. We spell both out in your written quote. Any project over $3,300 must be built by a QBCC-licensed contractor, and we hold the appropriate QBCC licence for this work.
Timber Sleeper Retaining Wall FAQs
How long does a timber sleeper wall last?
With galvanised steel posts and good drainage, an H4-treated pine wall will typically last 15 to 25 years, and a hardwood wall longer again. If you want a wall that lasts 50 years or more, a concrete sleeper wall is the better choice, and we are happy to quote both.
Will termites be a problem?
H4-treated pine is treated specifically to resist termites and rot below ground, and steel posts give the insects nothing to feed on. Proper treatment and drainage are what keep a timber wall safe in our climate.
Can I stain or paint the timber?
Yes. Treated pine and hardwood both take stain and paint well, and many homeowners oil or stain the wall to bring out the grain and match it to decking or fencing.
Do I still need drainage with a timber wall?
Absolutely, and arguably more than with any other material. Trapped water rots timber from behind. Every wall we build includes a subsoil drainage line so water never sits against the sleepers.
Our Other Retaining Wall Services
Timber is a great fit for gardens and lower walls, but it is not the only option we offer. For a wall that lasts decades with no rot, our concrete sleeper retaining walls are the popular modern choice. We also build core-filled Besser block walls for taller engineered structures, and rock and boulder walls for a rugged natural look. If an existing wall is leaning, rotting or holding water, our retaining wall drainage and repairs service can assess and fix it.
Areas We Serve
We build timber sleeper retaining walls right across the Gold Coast, with plenty of work in the sloping hinterland and the leafy suburbs where a timber wall suits the setting. That includes Nerang, Mudgeeraba, Worongary, Reedy Creek and Maudsland, along with Pacific Pines and the coastal suburbs from Coomera down to Currumbin. Wherever your block sits, we can build a timber wall that suits it.
Every wall we build uses timber treated to the relevant Australian Standard and is engineered to comply with the Queensland Development Code. You can check the treatment and durability standards through Standards Australia, and you can verify any builder’s QBCC licence through the Queensland Building and Construction Commission before you sign a contract. We always recommend you do.
