Besser Block Retaining Walls on the Gold Coast, QLD
Besser block retaining walls are the heavy-duty, engineered choice when a slope needs serious holding power on the Gold Coast. Where a sleeper wall suits gardens and lower terraces, a core-filled block wall is what you build when the wall is tall, carries a load, or has to last a lifetime under real pressure. At Gold Coast Retaining Walls we design and build reinforced, core-filled Besser block walls across the coast and the hinterland, from a rendered front-yard feature wall in Robina to a tall structural wall holding a driveway on a steep Nerang or Worongary block.
A Besser block wall is a different animal to a sleeper wall. Instead of panels slotted between posts, concrete blocks are laid in courses on a steel-reinforced concrete footing, vertical reinforcing bars run up through the hollow cores, and those cores are then filled solid with concrete. The result is effectively a single reinforced concrete wall with the strength to retain heights and loads that timber and standard sleeper walls cannot. It is more work to build, but on the right block there is no stronger residential option.
When a Block Wall Is the Right Call
A core-filled block wall earns its keep where strength matters most. We recommend it for taller walls, for walls carrying a surcharge load such as a driveway, pool or building above, and for sites where the ground is steep and the soil is working hard against the wall. It is also the wall of choice when you want a smooth rendered or bagged finish rather than the look of timber or off-form concrete sleepers. On the Gold Coast that often means the hinterland blocks behind the coast, where a long fall has to be terraced and held with real structure.
Built for Gold Coast Conditions
The Gold Coast throws two things at a retaining wall: a heavy subtropical wet season and, in the hinterland, reactive clay soils that swell and shrink with every wet and dry cycle. A block wall handles both when it is engineered correctly. The footing is sized and reinforced to the soil, the vertical and horizontal steel is specified by the engineer, the cores are filled solid, and drainage is built in behind the wall with weep holes, an ag pipe and free-draining aggregate. We never build a structural block wall without an engineer’s design, because at these heights and loads there is no room for guesswork.
Our Besser Block Retaining Wall Process
- Free on-site quote. We come to your block, measure the fall, assess the soil, access and load, and give you a fixed written quote with no obligation. Because block walls are almost always engineered, we will flag the likely engineering and approval path up front.
- Engineering and approval. Core-filled block walls are nearly always over a metre or carrying load, so RPEQ structural engineering and a building approval through a private certifier are part of the job. We arrange the engineering and the Form 15 and Form 16 paperwork so the wall is fully compliant and certified.
- Footing and reinforcement. We excavate and pour the steel-reinforced concrete footing, then set the vertical starter bars to the engineer’s spacing. The footing is the foundation of the whole wall, so it is done precisely.
- Blockwork, core-fill and drainage. We lay the blocks course by course, thread the horizontal reinforcement, fill the cores solid with concrete, and install the weep holes, ag pipe and drainage aggregate behind. The wall is then ready to render, bag or leave raw.
Besser Block Retaining Wall Cost on the Gold Coast
A core-filled block wall is one of the more expensive retaining options, and for good reason: there is a reinforced footing, steel, blockwork, core-filling and usually a render finish on top. As a guide, Besser block retaining walls on the Gold Coast run from about $450 to $700 per square metre supplied and installed, GST inclusive, with a rendered finish pushing that higher again. The exact figure depends on the height, the engineering, the finish and the site access, all of which we set out clearly in your written quote.
As with any engineered wall, RPEQ engineering certification typically runs $500 to $1,500 and the council building approval fee is usually a few hundred dollars. We never hide these costs in the fine print. Any project over $3,300 must be built by a QBCC-licensed contractor, and we hold the appropriate QBCC licence for this work.
Besser Block Retaining Wall FAQs
Why is a block wall more expensive than a sleeper wall?
Because it is a fully reinforced concrete structure. You are paying for a poured footing, vertical and horizontal steel, the blockwork itself, and the concrete that fills every core. That extra structure is exactly what lets it retain heights and loads a sleeper wall cannot.
Can a block wall be rendered?
Yes, and most are. A core-filled block wall takes render or a bagged finish beautifully, which is why it is the go-to for feature walls and walls that face the street. You can colour the render to match the house.
How tall can a block wall be built?
With the right engineering, considerably taller than a standard sleeper wall, and tall falls are often terraced into stepped block walls. Your engineer designs the footing, steel and core-fill to suit the height and the soil.
Do block walls need drainage?
Always. We build weep holes, a subsoil ag pipe and free-draining aggregate into every block wall so water cannot build up behind it. Hydrostatic pressure is the main thing that fails a masonry wall, and good drainage removes it.
Our Other Retaining Wall Services
A core-filled block wall is the strongest option, but it is not always the right one. For a clean, durable wall at a lower cost, our concrete sleeper retaining walls are the popular modern choice, while timber sleeper retaining walls suit gardens and lower terraces. For a rugged natural look we build rock and boulder walls. And if an existing wall is cracking, bulging or holding water, our retaining wall drainage and repairs service can assess and fix it.
Areas We Serve
We build Besser block retaining walls across the entire Gold Coast, with much of the structural work in the steep hinterland where height and load demand a reinforced wall. That includes Nerang, Mudgeeraba, Worongary, Reedy Creek and Maudsland, along with Pacific Pines and the coastal suburbs from Coomera down to Currumbin. Wherever your block sits, we can engineer and build a block wall to suit it.
Every block wall we build is engineered to the relevant Australian Standard for earth-retaining structures and complies with the National Construction Code and the Queensland Development Code. You can read the building requirements through the Australian Building Codes Board, and you can verify any builder’s QBCC licence through the Queensland Building and Construction Commission before you sign a contract. We always recommend you do both.
If your block needs a wall with real strength behind it, get in touch for a free, no-obligation quote. We will give you honest advice, a fixed price, and a reinforced wall built to last.
